In 1905 Alex Ludwig chose to retire and sold his business to his associate and friend, Charles Grohe. The business experiences wild growth in the following decade. Mr. Grohe was extremely nice and well liked by musicians, and he emphasized service as the key to growth.
The first store was located not too far from the historic Eads Bridge which spanned the Mississippi River for the first time in 1874. The Address of the store was 514 Walnut.
In 1909 Charles Grohe brought his brother-in-law, Henry Ruester into the business to assist him through the very difficult time of World War I.
In 1939, the Company has opened a second store at Grand and Gravois, which at that time was a high traffic location and the biggest bus and transfer point in St. Louis. In this location, pianos were featured for the first time.
Ludwig continued its strong emphasis on music education as well as instrument sales. In 1946, the Ludwig College of Music was started. The college enrolled a large number of returning wa veterans.
In 1955, at the untimely death of Henry Ruester, his son-in-law, Robert McDowell, was elected the president of the company.
In 1970, Ludwig Music House has purchased all the shares of the Aeolian Company of Missouri, and the company began to be referred to as Ludwig Aeolian.
In October of 1989, Ludwig Aeolian has moved to its present location, 3600 Rider Trail South . And, the Earth City building has become a Landmark in St. Louis, due to the bright colored grand pianos in the window facing Highway 70.
In May of 2006, Ludwig Aeolian changed it's name to Ludwig Aeolian Piano Superstore. New brands, new finishes and new styles were brought in to indeed make this piano store the place to shop for your next piano. Hand-made pianos from Mason & Hamlin and Schimmel are now on display in a variety of finishes.
